On November 4 at 5:15pm, a devastating plane crash took Louisville by storm. United Parcel Service (UPS) Flight 2976 took off to deliver packages to Honolulu, Hawaii. Sadly, nothing could have prepared anybody for what happened next.

Grief filled our city that week, with many families, friends and students in our Noe community affected.

“My brother was affected, my whole family was affected, even my friends; Dominique, Samuel, and Zak,” Eighth-grader Finn Bell said while talking about the plane crash.

Not only were students affected, but teachers, too.

“My son works at UPS and he was there,” 8th-grade math teacher Mrs. Lyle said. “Luckily, he was in his office, but he was still moved by it. He was devastated, but I have reassured him that his sadness will pass. Luckily, none of his friends were injured or hurt.”

As the plane began to take off, the left wing caught fire, causing the end to detach. The pilots desperately tried to control the aircraft.

The plane crashed into the nearest building, Kentucky Petroleum Recycling, destroying everything in its path.

The smoke reached miles away, and blanketed the sky above Noe Middle School. Louisvillians who were far enough away ran to the closest coverage, while others were in the path of the flames.

Several Amber alerts were set off, with the government doing everything in the power to keep the civilians of Louisville safe.

Out of caution, JCPS cancelled school Wednesday, Nov. 5.

Fourteen lives were lost that night, the youngest being only three years old, and the oldest being 65.
