Last year, it was Mean Girls. Now, it’s Singin’ in the Rain JR. The school is going in a completely different direction with their school musical, choosing a classic instead of a modern production.

Based on the 1952 movie, Singin’ in the Rain JR., takes place in Hollywood during the last days of the silent movie era.

The story follows Don Lockwood, one half of the blockbuster celebrity silent movie star couple Lockwood and Lamont, and the extreme measures taken when his co-star’s high-pitched and nasal voice threatens the duo’s successful transition into talking pictures.

“We all have a lot of fun backstage and onstage, yeah, this is like my whole life. Everybody in it is very talented and the dances are amazing and the songs are peak.

8th-Grader Billie Price

In silent movies and in tabloids, Don Lockwood and Lina Lamont are the perfect couple, but behind the scenes Lockwood has no feeling for his vapid co-star. Meanwhile, Lamont’s squeaky voice might be the end of the duo’s career in “talking pictures” without the help of a talented young actress to do the talking and singing for her.

Noe Middle School will present the Broadway production Singin’ in the Rain JR. Oct 20-22 at 9:30 am and 1:45 pm and Oct 22-24 at 6:30 pm at Noe. Daytime performances are by teacher reservation only. Tickets for evening shows are $10 each and may be purchased at noems.ludus.com.

Billie Price, an eighth-grader, plays Cathy, the lead in the musical.

“I originally wanted to be the lead, and I wasn’t sure because there were a lot of really good people auditioning,” Price said.

Billie’s role, Cathy, is a young actress looking for her big break, and instead falls in love with Don Lockwood, a famous silent movie actor and ends up being the voice for his partner, Lina Lamont, for their first talking picture.

“We all have a lot of fun backstage and onstage, yeah, this is like my whole life,” Price said. “Everybody in it is very talented and the dances are amazing and the songs are peak.

According to Price, the show is coming along smoothly and all are encouraged to buy tickets.
