Pickleball’s popularity has soared for a variety of reasons, creating experiences and memories that last, creates lasting friendships, improves mental health, and for many, is a fun sport for those who play.

It’s a fast-paced game that has parts of tennis, ping-pong, and badminton. It improves hand-eye coordination, helps burn calories, and is easy to learn. Robotics teacher Joseph Farmer is a good and dedicated player who takes the sport seriously.
“I think it’s fun,” he said. “I think it’s a fast growing sport in our country. Pickleball is just a smaller version of tennis. My wife played tennis in college and I just really like pickle ball.”
Farmer usually plays pickleball at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park, but there are many areas in our community that have courts. There are also places to play indoors, such as Pickle Ball Euphoria in the Springhurst neighborhood.
According to Farmer, you can play singles or doubles. Most people prefer doubles, he added.
“You go to 11 points,” Farmer said. “If you’re playing with a partner and both people serve the ball, you only score if you’re serving and you just hit the ball over the net.”
Farmer added there is a section called the Kitchen, which is painted a different color.
“You can’t step in the kitchen,” he said. “So, you can’t just stand right on the net and just slam it on someone.”
Pickleball is now a sanctioned high school sport in Kentucky, with the first official season and state championship being play during the 2027-28 school year.
