LOUISVILLE, KY, AUGUST 20 – The fall reading challenge returns in mid-September with incentives to get students reading.
Abbey Peirce, Noe Middle School librarian, said the fall reading challenge is going to begin Sept. 14 and run through Oct. 12. She added, students receive a theme, such as reading a book that’s set in the fall. Pierce said students will read at least two books matching the themes and have their parents sign off when they finish.
According to Pierce, students are entered into a lottery. Winners get Parent Teacher-Student Association (PTSA) items, such as shirts and sweaters, or snack bags. All students receive a gift card for participating, according to Pierce.
According to Pierce, how fast a student reads is not relevant. Everyone gets a fair chance in the lottery. The drawing is filmed, ensuring transparency.
If a student doesn’t win in the fall, there are reading challenges in winter and spring featuring new themes.
Each challenge features 30-40 students and Pierce is hoping that number grows.
